Capsule Wardrobe Challenge: Week in Review

It's time for me to end this challenge. I loved playing along and challenging myself to combine Spring pieces with Winter pieces. I also loved looking at what I had in my closet and interpreting the trends of Spring with what I had.

I would have made the following additional five outfits with these pieces if most of them didn't end up in the laundry hamper. :)

  • White tunic under graphic tunic dress with colorblock bet, turquoise pin on the collar, black tights and boots: Obviously his would be a weekend or evening party outfit.
  • Flower pattern jersey top with black cardigan and denim skirt and tall boots:  In this case, I'd wrap the chunky necklace around my arm as a three strand bracelet.
  • White tunic untucked under the citrus polka dot cardigan buttoned up and belted with the colorblock belt. I'd add the chunky necklace, brogue booties and pair this combination with black pants.
  • White tunic tucked in the skirt under the citrus polka dot cardigan buttoned up and belted with the colorblock belt. I'd add the chunky necklace, polka dot black hose and black boots.
  • White tunic under the jersey top and pair it with the black straight pants and brogue booties.

Thanks Small Fabric of My Life for organizing such a fun challenge. Looking forward to the next one.

Here is the recap of all my posts from the week:

Since it was still on the cold side, I added the motorcycle jacket in the last picture to all my outfits outdoors. In addition, I only used this handbag every day, but haven't always photographed it.

Please give me a moment to tell me which one was your favorite in comments and which wasn't if any.

Capsule Wardrobe Challenge: Day 5 - Graphic Prints and Cobalt Blue

Have a Spring-y Weekend!

Last day of the challenge! It was such a fast week with a busy schedule at work. It was really convenient to know what I need to wear every morning on such a week. Maybe I'll pick up the habit of planning week's outfits from Sunday.

At the last day, the only thing I added was the graphic print dress. It was going to be a casual day so I left the graphic print dress to Friday. This dress made an appearance on this blog once last year. The shoes and black pants make such a difference between two looks, don't they?

I'll post a recap of my challenge week this evening.

Capsule Wardrobe Challenge: Day 4 - Scarf as a Belt, Turquoise and Bold Tights

Is it Friday yet?

The fourth day of the capsule wardrobe challenge was to capture three Spring trends: creative use of scarfs thanks to warmer temperatures, turquoise accessories and bold patterned or colored tights. I'm sorry that my pictures didn't come out well today because of wrong lighting and limited time.

Today was a true remix of the pieces from the first three days. I added the fence patterned tights (couldn't go crazier at work) and the little turquoise ladybug pin which was on my accessory list for the challenge.

I love scarfs so I try to use them Winter or Summer. In Winter, I generally use warmer scarfs around my neck and shoulders. However, I have the best fun with scarfs during summer when I use them as a headband, belt, on a plain handbag to add color and details or I even wrap small bandannas around my wrist like a bracelet.

Scarfs don't wear out and they all have potential to be useful. So I don't get rid of unused scarfs near as much as other wardrobe items. As a result, I have a lot of scarfs and I don't wear some of them often enough. I decided to create a challenge for myself to wear a different scarf every day and make them useful until I go through my scarf drawers. It's starting next Monday. What wardrobe items do you accumulate the most?

Capsule Wardrobe Challenge: Day 3 - Pattern Mixing and Bold Printed Jersey

This cardigan is from NY&Co last year. Please refer to yesterday's post to find a similar cardigan.

I started remixing a number of items today, but added two new pieces. The graphic top and the tall black boots.

The trend I captured is the pattern mixing with the polka dot cardigan and a bold printed jersey top. Printed jersey tops and dresses are everywhere this Spring. This particular one have been a very versatile item for me for a couple of years since it is a mix of a bunch of my favorite colors.

I added the chunky necklace. I think it worked in an almost too much going on kind of way. What do you think?

PS: If you can string beads together, this necklace is an easy to build piece. Just contact me and I'll send you a close up picture and some techniques on how to best put it together.

Capsule Wardrobe Challenge: Day 2 - Monotone and Polka Dots

As it is probably becoming evident, my capsule challenge is capturing a Spring trend every day while staying within the allowed limits and making them work appropriate.

First day was all about color block and the rising black&white trend. In the second day, I tried to capture monotones and longer hemlines with the addition of one of Spring's favorite patterns, polka dots, in a trendy color. I went between a striped top and a solid blue top in thinking for this outfit and decided on a monotonic look just to keep it as a blank display for the cardigan and the chunky beads.

I used the same booties both days first with pants and then with a skirt. I feel like I'm missing an extra accessory this time, but this is all I am allowed to.

How did I do so far?

Capsule Wardrobe Challenge: Day 1 - Colorblock

This was the first day of the capsule wardrobe challenge. I thought I'd start with a classic black&white and add the colors and patterns slowly throughout the week. The pants are classic cut straight leg 7 jeans. The versatile white tunic is a few years old and it was remixed in numerous outfit.

I tried to create some visual interest by adding the red silk scarf, colorblock patent belt with a bike buckle and graphic patterned leather hobo bag. My 2-years old son saw the scarf and said "That's Mickey's!" meaning Minnie Mouse. It made me laugh.

The photos were taken after a few meetings so the shirt looks already worn. I'll use it as a regular button down next time. Maybe I can get away with not washing and pressing it again.

My Capsule for Spring Capsule Wardrobe Contest

I'll be joining the Spring Capsule Wardrobe Challenge for the first time. I had to design a capsule to work with my work schedule this week. This challenge will make an otherwise busy week a lot of fun. I already had fun just preparing for it. Here's my capsule:

10 individual items:

  1. Black straight jeans
  2. Dark denim pencil skirt
  3. Grey brogue booties
  4. Black tall boots
  5. Black cardigan
  6. Citrus polka dot cardigan
  7. White tunic shirt
  8. Graphic tunic-length dress
  9. Citrus printed jersey top
  10. Blue boat neck top

5 Accessories:

  1. Black and white belt with bike buckle
  2. Citrus+black+grey+yellow beaded necklace
  3. Red silk scarf
  4. Black bag
  5. Turquoise ladybug pin

The hardest part of the planning for me was to reduce the accessories. I generally use a few basic pieces, but play with accessories to make my outfits look different every time. I had to think more interms of patterns and textures for the challenge.

Below is my current plan.  Let's see if I'll have to deviate from it at all... 11-15 represent accessories. I'll stick 15 whenever I feel the need for an extra accessory.

  • Monday: 1+3+5+7+11+13+14
  • Tuesday: 2+3+6+10+11+12+14
  • Wednesday: 1+4+7+9+11+12+14
  • Thursday: 2+4+5+7+11+13+14
  • Friday: 1+4+5+8+11+14+15
