Is "Cobalt blue" same with "Saxon blue"?

Cobalt Blue is one of my favorite colors, but it is such a strong color for me hat I generally either tone it down with black and add very few accessories, or have a cardigan to break to strong color.

This outfit was a quick put together and although it's not clear in the picture the shirt has gold buttons around the neckline that looks like a necklace. I just added my Betsey Johnson leopard watch and my evil eye earrings from Turkey. I wore black cowboy shoes under it, but grey flats as in the picture below would also have been good.

I was also wondering if colbalt blu was same with saxon blue , but thanks to Wikipedia, I learned there's no cobalt in saxon blue. :) Saxon blue has Indigo... makes sense. My eye still can't distinguish between them very much, but I appreciate the difference.

Daily Steal: JCrew Vintage Matchstick Cord

I like JCrew cords for their softness and hold. Some other cords I tried get droopy after a while, but these ones hold and wash well.

Looking at the price, it seems like a good time to buy them. They also come in great colors.

If you live in San Diego or anywhere else near a JCrew Outlet Store, I heard that they are even cheaper at the outlet stores.

Wearing brown with black is sophisticated

An old fashion rule is "You can't wear brown with black!". Well, maybe it was the case in the old days. One story I heard is that it comes from the time when the aristocrat wore black and the working class wore brown. So mixing them was not an option.

I actually think brown and black could look really sophisticated together. Think of how sophisticated leopards look! Same goes with navy blue and black. With a careful eye on a few details, one can disproof a style cliche:
  • Compliment textures: A suddle pattern or texture change in fabrics could create a viusal interest making the colors looks rich and the combination playful.
  • Match fabric weights: You'll know it when fabric weights don't match. A simple example is don't wear a chiffon blouse with wool pants. (You might make is work by wearing a wool turtleneck under the blouse.)
  • Keep shades similar: Generally speaking, only match a shade of black with a shade of brown. I like to keep a flowing color palette by matching socks to shoes and maybe belt to the handbag.
  • Have accessories with both colors in them: I have a few purses that integrate black on other colors inluding brown. They are always a winner when I them add to a black or other neutral outfit. Same goes with animal prints. A leopard or cheetah belt works beautiful with a black and brown combination.
  • Add another visual interest: Black and brown are dark colors. Accessorizing or using patterns in the outfit makes the colors stand out.
  • Break the rules: Create your own rules if it looks good to your eye and makes you feel fab.

What do you think? Do you match black and brown? If so, what is your favorite way to wear them together?
